A striking 19th-century papier-mâché side chair, richly decorated with gilt detailing and mother-of-pearl inlay.
The black ground is covered with delicate floral motifs, butterflies and Chinoiserie-inspired decoration, with mother-of-pearl worked throughout the back, seat rail and frame. The shaped back and curved legs give it a particularly elegant silhouette, finished with a softly upholstered pale green seat.
A beautiful standalone chair for a bedroom, dressing table or hallway, or simply as a decorative piece in its own right.
There is age-related wear throughout, including rubbing and losses to the black finish, gilt decoration and areas of mother-of-pearl inlay. These are visible in the photographs and form part of the character of the piece.
