Kwele “Ekuk” heart mask from Gabon, carved in wood with the classic sweeping horn frame that curls around the face. These masks were traditionally hung in the village during Bwete rites to calm tensions, settle unrest and restore harmony after illness, conflict or loss. Their presence was believed to invite protective forest spirits and bring a sense of balance back to the community.
This example has a soft, timeworn surface with traces of white kaolin, a colour associated with peace and clarity.
